A 61-year-old taxi driver is in police custody after he allegedly stabbed a 36-year-old passenger at a local filling station in Thaba Nchu, Free State.
On Wednesday, a taxi arrived at Thaba Nchu from Bloemfontein.
According to a police statement, passengers were exiting the taxi and one passenger allegedly requested his change from the taxi driver.
"It is alleged that a fight broke out between the driver and the passenger. The taxi driver allegedly went inside his taxi and took out a knife. He allegedly went to the passenger that was requesting his change and allegedly stabbed him on the chest."
Taxi driver then drove to the police station and reported himself to the police.
Police went to the crime scene and found the deceased lying on the ground.
Paramedics were called to the scene and they certified the African male dead.
A case of murder was opened for investigation and the taxi driver is expected to appear before the Thaba Nchu Magistrates’ Court soon.
