The Sunday Times reported that the police are investigating links between the slain Mark Batchelor and the theft of a ton of cocaine.
The former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates striker was shot several times outside his home in northern Johannesburg last week. The unidentified suspects fled on motorcycles and no arrests have been made.
The newspaper reported that the same organised crime unit that are investigating the death of Serbian national Ivan Djordjevic - who was killed in a similar style hit - are looking into connections between the murders.
The report revealed that Batchelor, the owner of a debt collection company, had gone into business with Djordjevic and the duo were allegedly involved in the theft of one ton of cocaine.
Batchelor’s memorial service is set to take place at The Crossing Church on Friday.
