Bafana Bafana interim coach Molefi Ntseki has named a 23-man squad for the international friendly with Zambia in Lusaka on September 7.

Ntseki was appointed caretaker coach after the resignation of Stuart Baxter last month.

Kaizer Chiefs defender Erick Mathoho makes his return to the Bafana set-up for the first time since 2017, having been overlooked in the Baxter era. Mathoho has been rewarded for his impressive early season performances for the Amakhosi, scoring two goals in as many matches and providing solidity at the heart of the defence.

Mamelodi Sundowns full-back Thapelo Morena is another player who was ignored during the Baxter tenure but that has now received a call-up.

Bidvest Wits shot-stopper Brandon Petersen and Cape Town City midfielder Thato Mokeke are the two uncapped players named in the squad.

"We've added new faces not because we are not happy with players at AFCON but life has taught me to pave my own way, instead of following someone else's path," said Ntseki in his address.

"I've learnt so much from my predecssors, whom I'd like to thank, and as I announce my first squad as interim coach, I'd like to state that I know there are many eligible players but I cannot please everyone.

"I might make a few mistakes but I hope that will not derail the progress that we've made in the past."
