The Democratic Alliance revealed that the government has spent at least R82 million on perks for former presidents over the last five years.
The Sowetan reports that Dr Leon Schrieber, MP and DA shadow minister for public service and administration, revealed the harrowing figures.
After seeing former president Jacob Zuma arrive at the Zondo Commission with a fleet of eight luxury vehicles, a blue light brigade and dozens of security personnel, the DA tabled questions to parliament about the spend on former presidents’ lifestyles.
The figure was based on allocations for former presidents Zuma, Thabo Mbeki, Kgalema Mothlante and FW de Klerk and their spouses, as well as former deputy presidents Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka and Baleka Mbete.
Schrieber added that the DA intends to ask follow up questions about the breakdown of the spend.
