Police believe that the cause of the St Francis fire, which damaged several homes, is an act of arson.

The fire occurred in Lyme Road North on Thursday.

According to reports, two helicopters and 85 firefighters fought hard to put out the blaze. Several homes were destroyed in the fire.

In a statement released by police, the fire reportedly broke out after two suspects were calming bees with smoke.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Majola Nkohl said a woman came forward and let police know about the two suspects who were calming bees.

"It is alleged that upon seeing that smoke was turning into fire, both men ran away."

Police are now urging anyone with information to come forward to assist them in nabbing the suspects.

"Police are urging anyone with information that could assist with their investigation to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Lwazi Solombela, at 071 475 1831.  The information may also be shared anonymously via Crime Stop 08600 10111."
