Nigeria's ambassador to South Africa Kabiru Bala confirmed that the ongoing violence in the country will not affect relations between the two countries.

Officials from the Department of International Relations , as well as Minister Naledi Pandor on Monday, met with various diplomats to discuss the recent tensions.

Angry South Africans targeted Nigerians and other foreign nationals as well but Bala said that despite this "not all is lost".

Relations between Nigeria and South Africa have been under pressure.

"And I also see that we will continue to have excellent relations and we must, for the survival of our continent because these are two major economies," Bala said.

Bala said that other ambassadors in countries across the world were concerned about the safety of their nationals who are living and working in South Africa.

Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari is expected to visit the country in October in a bid to mend relations between SA and Nigeria.
