Eight babies were killed after a fire broke out in a maternity hospital in eastern Algeria on Tuesday.
According to reports, the fire started just after the 3:50 am at the hospital in Oued Souf.
Spokesman Captain Nassim Bernaoui told AFP that they "managed to rescue 11 babies, 107 women and 28 staff".
"Unfortunately, we regret the deaths of eight babies, some from burns and others from smoke inhalation."
Bernaoui said that the cause of the fire was not yet known.
