A teacher accused of having sex with a 13-year-old learner at a school in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal has been suspended.
The teacher allegedly psychologically groomed the girl into believing they were in a relationship.
According to reports, the accused was facing charges of statutory rape and attempted murder and appeared in court last week.
The school decided to suspend the teacher pending on the outcome of the investigation.
When the girl fell pregnant, the accused gave her tablets convincing her that it was for pain. She was rushed to hospital in a critical condition. It was then discovered that the tablets he had given the girl were to induce an abortion.
The Education Department spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said that the teacher would be subjected to an internal investigation and disciplinary hearing.
"If we find the allegations against the teacher are true, we won’t hesitate to fire him because he knew what he was getting himself into."
"It’s not only prohibited at school, but it’s also a disgrace for an elderly man to have a sexual relationship with a minor child."
