Johannesburg residents have been urged to try to save water.

This comes after the level of the Vaal Dam dropped to 53.1%.

"Vaal dam sitting at 53.1% AND no water transfers to the Vaal dam system will be possible til 30 Nov due to maintenance," the City of Johannesburg wrote on Twitter.

The City asked residents to take certain steps in trying to reduce the amount of water they use on a daily basis.

Residents were asked to not water their gardens between 06:00 and 18:00, as well as shorten shower times and "take shallow baths".

The City said that due to maintenance, no water transfers will be possible until November 30.
