The Hawks have confirmed that former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede’s home has been raided for assets.

Officers and members of the Asset Forfeiture Unit arrived at Somerset Park in Umhlanga, north of Durban, early on Thursday morning and gained access to the property.

The raid is in relation to the corruption charges facing Gumede and her co-accused after their involvement in a R208 million Durban Solid Waste tender. The ANC has since removed her from her position.

Nationals Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Natasha Kara told News24 said the raid is routine.

"This is simple a seizure of assets," said Kara, adding that the homes of the co-accused were raided and assets such as Lamborghinis were seized.

"We got an order from the court to seize their assets from the various accused in her corruption matter pending the outcome of the criminal charge. In so far as the state's goes, we believe these are proceeds of crime.

"When we believe an accused owns assets that are proceeds of crime, we get an order from the court to confiscate them and put them under curatorship and the assets stay with the curator. It is not something new or discriminatory. We do this to many accused. This is just a process of the law."
